Brought to you by Kids in Design, this course introduces students to a variety of overlapping ideas in architecture, engineering, and math. Each concept is presented alongside a hands-on project. The course fosters the ability to recognize complex mathematical patterns and creatively solve challenging real-world problems. We will complete various open-ended engineering and design challenges, explore a variety of structural concepts, and prototype several historically significant structures. Our teachers are architects, professors, designers; all are experienced educators. The course will explore some of the following concepts: Skyscrapers, bridges, and domes! Explore different structural systems and create your own solutions. Design and create hybrid multipurpose architectural components: roofs, stairs, support systems, and more. What is the relationship between architecture and landscape? Explore iconic works by Le Corbusier and design a room for a tree, a room for water, a room for art. Could we “invite” landscape and environment into our buildings? Could the structure be part of the landscape? Could the buildings move if need be? How?
